At AASMUN, we generally follow THIMUN procedure, though we have a few rules and differences from what many delegates may be used to. Some of these are in place to constructively aid the flow of debate, while some have been made to be more accurate to how the United Nations functions in reality. A full document detailing the procedure is found below. For experienced delegates, we have outlined what will likely be the main differences between this and other conferences you have been to. Note that security council procedure uses a different structure, which is outlined at the bottom of the page.
Main differences / Key things to note:
At AASMUN, we do NOT allow sub-sub clauses, only sub-clauses. You can either combine the sub-sub clauses into the main clause, and if this is not doable the sub-clause is important enough to warrant its own clause
Motion to follow up // right to reply are synonymously, they are not distinct. Several replies in a row will generally not be entertained.
Yield chains are not allowed, you may not yield the floor if you were yielded to.
Security Council Procedure:
The security council procedure is different, to compensate for veto rights and ensure constructive debate. The full document detailing our procedure can be found here. In addition, the flow of debate may feel different as the goal is to constructively work on the resolution. In security council, it is not unusual to yield to a delegate with opposing views, to further discuss and constructively aid the resolution.
